Hey, I’m Ben

I help owners build a business that can run without them.

I’m Ben Trengrove. I’m not a guru with a framework I read in a book — I’m an operator who lived the complexity from the inside and found the way out. Now I help owners of $1–5M businesses get out of the day-to-day and become owners, not operators.

The short version

Why I do this.

For about five years I was the GM inside a busy, owner-dependent operation. From the outside it looked like it was humming. From the inside, the whole thing ran on a handful of people’s memories — no org chart, no systems, no real way for the owner to step back without it wobbling.

Every decision routed through a few heads. How we quoted, how we hired, how the real work actually got done — none of it was written down. It lived in people. Which meant the business couldn’t breathe without those people in the room, and the owner couldn’t take a real break without the phone going off.

I spent a long time thinking that was a people problem — if we just hired better, tried harder, cared more. It isn’t. It’s a system problem. The business had been built to run on people instead of on its own operating system. That’s incredibly common, and once I saw it clearly, I also saw that it’s completely fixable.

So that’s what I do now. I sit beside owners who are stuck in the middle of their own business and help them build the thing that finally can run without them — not by adding one more app or one more funnel, but by installing the operating system underneath it all.

What I believe

A few things I won’t budge on.

If it can’t run without you, you own a job.

A business that depends on you in the room isn’t a business you own — it’s a job you can’t quit. Getting out of the day-to-day isn’t redundancy. It’s a promotion.

Make it simpler, not more complicated.

Most advice sells you one more complicated thing to keep on top of. I do the opposite — I make the business simpler, so it runs on systems instead of on you.

Operator, not guru.

I lived this from the inside, not from a stage. We build the actual map, the actual systems, the actual AI — and stay on it until the team uses them. Build-first, not advice-first.

Treat the business as one system.

Vision, people, communication, SOPs and AI all connect. I work across operations as a whole — not finance, not sales and marketing. That’s the lane where I’m genuinely useful.

The honest bit

If we work together, you get me.

Not a portal full of videos. Not a team of associates. Me, in your corner for 90 days, helping you get the vision out of your head, hand your team real ownership, and let AI run the busywork — until the business is finally yours to lead, grow, or step back from. Your call.

Where I’m at

Working with a first handful of founding clients.

I’m based in Aotearoa New Zealand, and right now I’m working with a small founding group of owners — the first to install The Self-Running Business. It’s done with you, hands-on, so I only take a few at a time.

If your business still runs on you — and you’re ready for it to stop — I’d like to hear where it’s at.

Think we’d work well together?

There’s only one way to find out. Tell me where the business is at, and if it’s a fit we’ll map the first thing worth fixing. No pressure, no pitch deck.
